The insane, gory, and macabre excitement continues in Derek Landy’s
bestselling series with Death Bringer…
The book chronicles the exciting and dangerous adventures of detectives
Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain as they contend with a new threat: the
Necromancers’ fabled Death Bringer. Although Valkyrie was thought to be the
Necromancers’ ‘savour’, the position has been usurped by Melancholia who has
risen to power through Cleric Craven’s experiments. With Melancholia becoming
increasingly unstable and Lord Vile on the loose, this is going to be the
toughest Armageddon that Valkyrie and Skulduggery have ever faced.
As the outer world dramas, as well as the characters’ internal battles,
all start to come to a head the books are getting bigger and bigger. Death Bringer is six hundred pages of
excitement, drama, gore, and inner monologues for readers to enjoy as well as
the added bonus of being inspired to yell at the hypocrisies of beloved
characters and the annoying personalities of lesser ones.
Teenage angst blended with supernatural battles appears to be the
ultimate stimulus for those days when your mind is not cooperating; as an adult
reader who can appreciate, but doesn’t necessarily relate to, Valkyrie Cain, I
have to say that there was an added enjoyment for me in this book, which
manifested in my being able to read about Valkyrie’s problems and yell at her
that she was being childish, selfish, insensitive, and dumb… and boy it does
feel good to yell at fictional characters!

The dynamic between Valkyrie and Skulduggery does change somewhat
drastically in this book, but in a really interesting and unforeseen way, and
supporting characters such as China Sorrows have entire chapters devoted to
their own separate stories and developments.
The exciting and adventurous quest narrative about saving the world
still refuses to change, the ultimate treat, which makes these later books
where the meaty developments take place all the more enthralling and well
rounded. Right up to the last page Death
Bringer captivates, excites, enrages, and mortifies its readers with every
word.
Death Bringer is the sixth book in Derek Landy’s Skulduggery Pleasant series and was
published by HarperCollins Children’s
Books in 2011.
