Now a major film starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler, P.S I Love You is a beautiful story written by Cecelia Ahern and tells a story of loss, grief, and getting through life one day at a time.
Holly and Gerry were the perfect couple. No one could imagine one without the other. They lived a charmed and romantic life until the unthinkable happened. Gerry’s death greatly devastates Holly, but as her 30th birthday looms nearer, she discovers that Gerry has left her a bundle of letters, gently guiding her into a new life without him, each letter ending with the sentence “PS I love you.” With some help from her friends and her noisy and loving family, Holly learns to laugh, sing, cry, and dance, and finds herself braver than she has ever been before.
Usually I am a firm believer in reading the book before I see the film, however, I actually had no idea that this was a book until I came across it in a shop a couple of months after seeing the film.
The story gets you hooked right away, with the biggest and most devastating drama occurring at the beginning, a clever and very effective plot device.
The book is written in the third person, the eye of the observer, and, although it is a fictional tale of romance, the settings and the actions of the characters are so simple and down to earth, you can easily believe that they really happened, making the book more enjoyable to read as it keeps the idea of real romance and creativeness alive. It gives you a warm feeling all over, like you’ve just slowly slipped into a warm bath.
The language is very simple, very casual, and modern, so the story itself is really easy to read and because the plot is so enticing, you’ll find that you’ll easily finish this book in no time.
Filled with romance, loss, devastation, friends, family, misdemeanours, and drama, P.S I Love You is a beautiful romantic tale about getting through life one day at a time, growing up in the process. It is definitely a book that I could read again.
