Volume I in the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is hands-down the most gripping and incredibly crafted thriller that I have had the pleasure of reading. I am a person who hates having nothing to read, so I tend to dive right into another book as soon as I’ve finished the one I’m on. After finishing this book, I dived straight into Her Fearful Symmetry (because I didn’t have the second or third book in the trilogy at that time) and it took me almost a month to actually make it through half of the book. Seriously after Girl With the Dragon tattoo, everything else seems mundane in comparison. That’s how brilliant this book was!
Many years ago, Harriet Vanger, niece of rich and famous business tycoon Henrik Vanger, disappeared. For many years Henrik has been tormented by her disappearance and is convinced that a member of his family has committed murder. In one final attempt to discover what happened to Harriet, Henrik hires disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist to conduct a private investigation. Assisting Blomkvist is the antisocial delinquent, genius computer hacker and girl with the dragon tattoo, Lisbeth Salander. But as Blomkvist and Salander delve deeper into the history of the large Vanger family, they uncover some secrets and the investigation takes a dangerous and sinister turn as there is someone who will go to any lengths to keep the past buried.
Introducing the world to one of the most inspiring and original heroines, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a spectacular thriller filled with danger, betrayal, murder, rape, and constant twists of the plot. Each chapter is dated so that the reader knows where they are in terms of a time frame. I really like this, seeing as time is something, particularly in thrillers, that you really need to keep track of. The writing itself is very easy to follow, though some of the Swedish names are a little difficult to pronounce, and uses modern phrasing and terms that the reader can understand and relate to. Some parts of the story can get a little graphic and the book does look into some confronting issues such as rape, sadism, incest, and religious-based murders. There is a fair bit of violence, which only makes the story more and more enthralling. Once you’ve started reading it, you literally cannot put the book down. More than 22 millions copies of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo have been sold worldwide and it has been made into a film. It’s a truly gripping, thrilling, and stunning novel that will have you experiencing everything from anticipation to complete and utter shock. A truly unique book, I highly recommend you grab yourself a copy.
