The classic character of detective Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion Dr Watson, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, show us just a handful of their adventures together in
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
Out of his smoke-filled rooms in Baker Street stalks a figure to cause the criminal classes to quake in their boots and rush from their dens of iniquity...
Consisting of 12 mysteries, this book is the first collection of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson's adventures together. Written from the point of view of Watson, the book tells the stories of the following cases:
- A Scandal In Bohemia
- A Case of Identity
- The Red-Headed League
- The Boscombe Valley Mystery
- The Five Orange Pips
- The Man With The Twisted Lip
- The Blue Carbuncle
- The Speckled Band
- The Engineer's Thumb
- The Nobel Bachelor
- The Beryl Coronet
- The Copper Beeches
Each mystery is about 10 to maybe 30 pages long and all are very easy to read. Admittedly, in comparison to the crime novels and thrilling mysteries of today, some of these stories are a little bland or dated, but the book is easy enough to become enthralled in, as you see Sherlock Holmes at the height of his game, making these grand conclusions from the most minuscule details, and trying to beat him to it.
Sherlock Holmes is a character that has appeared on page and screen time and time again, and it's very interesting to go back to these earlier mysteries and see how characters and situations have evolved. A very good read.
